CSI Parish, Sharjah – Sunday School

A Bird’s Eye View

Our Sunday School had a humble beginning – with 28 students and 5 teachers – in October 1995, well before the Parish was officially recognized, with a mission to facilitate scripture study for our children who did not have the facility or were attending other Sunday schools in Sharjah.

By Almighty’s grace, the Sunday school has grown steadily and currently has around 200 students and 26 teachers on its roll. The primary aim of our Parish Sunday school is to bring children to Jesus, in obedience to His command, by teaching them the truth of God’s word.

In order to ensure the smooth running of the Sunday School a Sunday School Committee was first formed in 2007 with a one-year office term. Sunday school is headed by the Headmaster/Headmistress (Ex-officio) and assisted by teachers. The Sunday School committee manages all administrative tasks with the Vicar being the President (Ex-officio). The Parish provides the necessary financial support for the smooth functioning of the Sunday school.

The Sunday School academic year runs from January to December. We follow the syllabus prescribed by the Department of Christian Education of Madhya Kerala Diocese for children from Nursery to Youth level. The curriculum is based on teaching the holy scripture in-depth aiming a child to face the modern life challenges along with lessons about our church’s worship, faith and history. Children in the age group 3 – 16 years are admitted to the Sunday school in classes starting from Nursery to Yuvavakuppu. Sunday school is conducted on Sundays immediately after the Divine Worship Service, from 10:30 a.m.

Attendance prizes are awarded to motivate and encourage children to attend Sunday school regularly. Memory Verse Competition is held during the first half and the annual examination is conducted at the end of the academic year. To showcase and develop children’s God-given talents, a Talent Day is conducted once a year. Retreats for children and teachers and many other informative and development-related programmes are organized regularly.

World Sunday School Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of November. Vacation Bible School (VBS) is conducted yearly in March in which children from sister parishes and other denominations also participate. Eminent VBS Directors are invited to lead the VBS with the support of the Parish, and Sunday School Committee as well as volunteers from all church organizations.

To generate awareness among children about the need to support the less fortunate, a special offertory is collected during World Sunday School Day and VBS. Children contribute enthusiastically towards charity and these contributions are distributed to the children’s charity institutions back in India.

We pray that our Lord Jesus may take each of these little ones in His mighty hands like clay in potter’s hands, mould them and make them useful vessels in His household and the Sunday school be a tool in this regard. With God’s blessings and the earnest efforts of teachers and the co-operation of parents, the Sunday School continues to grow.

Glory be to the Lord!
